Could the "drooping" of the pages eventually damage the textbook?

I put it on a bookstand as I have neck pain, and it's much easier on my neck to read it straight up.

I think you choosed wrong bookstand for you. You need page keeping part in your bookstand. And some of them has changeable angle properties. Get a new one like this;

And also when you read in your hand, you can use this book holder. It's brilliant.

+1 The one depicted by the questioner is made out of plastic so is probably not made for bigger books. –  Tom Wijsman Sep 25 '11 at 20:23

Wow - good example! What are some examples of such bookstands that I could buy? –  InquilineKea Sep 26 '11 at 0:03
