Personal Productivity Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for people wanting to improve their personal productivity. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a habit of talking "loudly" to myself. I get an immense satisfaction by doing so.

At the same time, I tend to do this in the market, while driving the scooter, working on a C program. Everywhere! I have no control over myself. I am causing a public embarrassment to myself.

Thanks to this habit, my mind is never calm, never on focus. I get physically tired frequently but this doesn't stop me from talking to myself.
Any ideas anyone?

Just enjoy it as a part of your character and be proud of who you are! –  Mongus Pong Sep 30 '11 at 10:03

@Mongus I hope that's a joke. –  TheIndependentAquarius Sep 30 '11 at 10:24

certainly not! I find the sort of people who talk to themselves to be generally less reserved and have a bright personality who are a pleasure to be around. It is not something to be embarrassed of, the world needs more people like you! –  Mongus Pong Sep 30 '11 at 10:41

I don't have an answer but I clicked through this question to say something similar--do try to lessen the impact of public embarrassment, but do so knowing that it's not your fault, it's society's for looking down on eccentric people, when those are the ones who make me proud to be a part of mankind. –  Vic Goldfeld Nov 10 '12 at 11:19

@GwenMatthews Or because they're a regular user of this site. You're clearly upset about this behavior in yourself, but I'd encourage you to not generalize and project your own negative opinion about it on to the population at large. –  Dave Newton Feb 28 '13 at 12:16

When looks weird

Repeat this; Don't talk to myself, don't talk to myself, don't talk to myself… BrainStackOverflow

  • Maybe your real problem of talking to yourself is that you have no one else to talk to. Try to talk more people everyday and analyze this is working or not. Sometimes everybody feel lonely.
  • Try them to keep inside your head. Shut your mouth. By this, conversation continue in your head. Bite your lips. Kind a dramatic.
  • If you can't prevent it, try to it with whispering.
  • Listen to music. For example, when you walking somewhere, give your focus to music instead of something else cause to talk yourself. Maybe this can be help. Funny thing is; If you are wearing headphones and realize you are talking to yourself, maybe people will think the headphones accessorize your cell phone. They will assume you are talking to someone else :)

When not looks weird

I mostly talking myself when I writing code. It gives me focus and clearly explain myself what am I doing. I feel good talking to myself when nobody around me.

But

If you think it is a serious problem, visit a counselor for a diagnosis. Get a professional help.

This is why you should not use recursion; loops are fine, though. void think() { std::cout << "Don't talk to myself. "; think(); } –  muntoo Dec 17 '11 at 20:34

I 'talk to myself' inside my head. (But then, I think almost everyone does...) –  muntoo Dec 17 '11 at 20:35

@Soner Gonul: That won't usually work. That will often backfire because of ironic mental processes. –  proton Feb 28 '13 at 1:10

It's sounds like your verbal self-dialogue is necessary to help keep your mind in focus. I find I need to speak my thoughts out loud when I'm trying to slow my mind down and concentrate on what I'm trying to develop (I'm a programmer, as well).

Remember...you are not alone. The idea of listening to music or just having some background auditory stimulation is a good one. But, please don't stop talking...it's healthy.

You can try this:

Put a rubber band on your wrist. Snap it hard (and mentally yell STOP) every time you find yourself talking to yourself out loud.

I used this technique to get myself to stop mentally talking down to myself and it works quite well at getting your attention when you are doing something you don't want to be doing.

Thanks, Anisha. I have a huge problem with this too, only because it makes me seem ridiculous to my co-workers. So i have an Outlook reminder now, to keep me aware of not doing it, because otherwise i absolutely have no idea i'm doing it. And on bad days, i also just put scotch tape over my lips. It sounds weird, and it's a pain, but it works.

I also sing a lot, if i'm not careful. It does feel really good, but i'm the only person at work who does it, so again, it makes me stand out, which i no longer want.

I like the music idea! it's hard to focus with music, but maybe classical? I'm going to try that.

The reminder option sounds cool, thanks. –  TheIndependentAquarius Jul 31 '12 at 8:51

When you start talking to yourself, try to find someone else to talk to instead. If you are at home and should be at work, then you must hurry to your work place to find someone to talk to.
