I love twitter but as I follow more people I get more and more updates that are just noise to me. For example many people I share interests with and who I follow but I don't know keep posting about their daily activities that are of no interest to me. I mostly use twitter to discover new resources on topics I care about. There has to be a better way? I have used Twitterfall.com to filter by topics but the user experience is not quite right. What are the best apps/tools for filtering twitter? |

You're on the right track, I find that Twitter is best used by following topics than people. The best way I have found to do that is to use a third-party tool like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck (there are others). They have web-apps that allow you to 'follow' certain keywords or hashtags. Technically, you want to open the service, say Hootsuite, and create a stream for one or several keywords relevant to the topic you're interested in. You can create several streams for several topics. You will then be notified whenever there is a new tweet including the keyword you're tracking. |
