Personal Productivity Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for people wanting to improve their personal productivity. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm looking for simple (all I need is a time tracking feature) time tracking software that meets the following requirements:

  • Does not require an active Internet connection. For this reason web apps are not acceptable; I may not have net access for a few days at a time.
  • Runs on Mac OS X and iOS.
  • Syncs easily between Mac OS X and iOS.

I've been looking around but I haven't managed to find something that runs on both platforms and syncs between them.

Is there anything out there that does this?

I might suggest trying this over at the apple stack-exchange... I'd certainly be interested in the answers either way... – Joe Apr 24 '12 at 15:15
I don't know what your requirements for the software are, but if you manage to do some "manual" time tracking with a simple text file, evernote is the way to go. Bonus: It's free and can do a lot of other neat stuff. – 0x6d64 Apr 29 '12 at 12:17

I'd definitely recommend something cloud based that is supported on both platforms. There are several online timesheets out there that will do exactly what you talked about above - use an internet connection to sync but does not need a connection all the time. I travel frequently and have never had a problem getting off an airplane, or being out of service for extended periods of time, and syncing all my time tracked on multiple projects with my provider, TSheets.

Timings (for Mac & iOS) is exactly what you're looking for: http://www.grandtotal.biz/Timings/

Hi Alex - welcome to Productivity. Can you let us know what about this app makes it suitable? A link by itself isn't very useful, as it may suffer link rot or change. – Rory Alsop Oct 28 '12 at 17:27

I think you should try also http://www.timetrack.eu. There is a Mac version available and it runs on the desktop so you don't need to worry about the Internet connection. Simple layout, and you can also download it on your mobile phone.

It's hard to find such a program, because now everything is cloud based and that's not bad if you ask me. The app I use for time tracking, project management and invoicing is called Paymo and I've been using it for almost 6 months now.

It woks on iOS, Mac and Windows so you're basically covered on all platforms. The thing is that it needs internet connection to login, but it doesn't need it to keep track of your time. It can run without internet and when you get online, it will automatically sync to your account and voila, all the data is in one place. My suggestion is to at least try it out.

I use our internal app coinr with the hash tag #time, it works offline and syncs once you are online. Responsive design so it is kinda nice. I think the team are open to suggestions on syncing connectors if you want a specific endpoint built.

Currently #expense going to saasu and #bug goes to github issues and #file goes to your dropbox so they can push #time or #timesheet anywhere if you want.

Its in beta (sort of) but subsidisied by other wholesale clients so I expect it will be around for a long time and will continue to be built on.

The saasu and xero partners pages also have a good list of time tracking tools.

WARNING: Shameless Plug Below

I've actually written an iOS app called Key Indicators that you can use to track your time, but it does not yet sync between devices; furthermore, it is only for iOS devices, no Mac support yet.

It's a pretty simple app, but it serves all my time tracking needs. I regularly track 80-90 hours a week on it. I'm pretty sure that I'm the only person in the world who actually uses it that much, but I built it because I needed it. You can read a little more about it at http://blank-sketch.com/key-indicators/ if you'd like.

It's not really well documented yet, but it's pretty easy to get around once you've messed with it for a few seconds.

I'm going to have to go out on a limb and say I don't think such a thing exists. Seeing as you want the app on both Mac and iPhone/iPad and want both to sync vice versa, you need some kind of connection for this to happen. It can't happen without.

Needing an Internet connection to sync is fine; I just need it not to require an Internet connection all the time. – Patrick Kenny Apr 29 '12 at 1:48

There are a few time trackers that are available for Mac and iOS and are not web based including Billings, Task Timer and OfficeTime.

I recommend OfficeTime (www.officetime.net) however admit I'm biased due to being the lead developer. We designed OfficeTime specifically for ease of use after trying all the other time trackers available in the App Store. Both apps have a 120 day money back guarantee.

Would be happy to answer any questions about time tracking.
