I'm trying to mass-scan stacks of documents, but my scanner doesn't have a page feeder.

Instead, I want a device that takes a piece of paper off the bottom (or top) of a stack, moves it over the scanner, and holds it there for 2 minutes (or some other specified period of time).

After 2 minutes, it dumps the paper into an "out" pile and proceeds with the next piece of paper.

This seems pretty silly, but, if my scanner is scanning constantly (with manual checks after the entire stack is "scanned"), it's a cheap workable solution.

Does such a device exist and/or does anyone have other suggestions (short of "buy a scanner with a feeder and get it working with Linux")?

Do you want to accomplish this with the tools you have, or are you open to a different tool? For instance, what's happening to double-sided documents? –  Raystafarian Jul 18 '13 at 8:34
    
I'd like to accomplish this with the tools I have, but am open to low-cost new/different tools. For double sided documents, I'll run them through once "face up" and once again "face down". I'm trying to lower the amount of time I spend tending the scanner, but realize I can't bring it down to zero. –  barrycarter Jul 18 '13 at 16:47
    
Have you considered going to a local print shop that has those crazy big scanners? Or are you worried about privacy with something like that? oops, I see you addressed that below. It might be something you'd want to price out as an option. Or if you have a smart phone you might be able to rig something up. –  Raystafarian Jul 18 '13 at 16:56

I'd say buying a auto-load scanner would be the most cost effective. Unless, of course, you're good at robotics.. The main hurdle to DIY on this is removing the page from the flatbed without damaging the flatbed. I'd say there's more luck in a conveyor belt of documents with a timed camera above, but at that point it's more of a science experiment than productivity.. –  Raystafarian Jul 18 '13 at 18:35

Actually - What I do when I have a stack of pages to be scanned is use a photocopier - a very large proportion of the modern ones have 'send as pdf' functions (it was a godsend when I moved all my paperwork into evernote). All four offices I've worked in since then have had a photocopier with the same functionality so I think it might be suprisingly common (turns out that nobody in this office knew)

Sadly, my HP PSC 1510 doesn't have this function (home office). Kinko's or someone may do this, but it could get pricey (I am literally trying to scan in 30+ years worth of data... including printed VIC 20 program listings!) –  barrycarter Jul 18 '13 at 6:53
