Like I said: look for similar minded people to spend your time. About work: I think that being interested in a lot of different things myself helps be be a better engineer, because I naturally talk to colleagues about their work and later can use that knowledge to 1. get the "bigger picture" and 2. transfer some concepts or solutions from other areas to my work.

I really don't get what your question here is. If learning new things is something you enjoy, it does not have to have another purpose IMO. Maybe your question is "how can I apply my broad interests in an open / creative environment?". Then think about joining a hacker/maker space or programming project. If you want to program and solve math puzzles: take a look at projecteuler.net
