Do game-based methods exist? I'm not going to add this as its own answer because it isn't for general tasks, but rather fitness. Fitocracy.com is a social site that gives you points for various exercises. It also gives quests (like do 100 push ups) and achievements (like bench press 90% of your body weight). You are able to level up and compete against friends. I've been using it for a few months and it's been pretty effective at getting me off my butt. |

Version control for homework? This was absolutely essential for me in college and would work much better for a student than dropbox. Sure, you don't have to install dropbox on a computer to use it, but you still have to waste time downloading the file, changing it, and uploading it again. Google Docs don't require any of that. |
