Just about every fountain pen goes into the pocket nib up. What distinguishes the Vanishing Point is that there is no cap; the nib extends. As a consequence of that, to get the nib up in the pocket, the clip is on the end of the pen that you hold while writing. Some hate it, some are fine with it and love the quick click to start / no cap to post or lose feature.
