Well, your case is much more straight forward than I thought. Have any startup ideas? you're a developer with management experience (that's founder material). Now is the time to invest in your/a startup. it's only logical - Spock

I can only give "generalist" advice because I have no knowledge of your job, skills, or goals. So my answers will tend to have a philosophical ring to them.

Well, think of it like this. What are you currently working to achieve? how is progression like in your field? does it lean more towards years of experience (e.g in government jobs) or skill level(e.g tech fields) this will help you know what to work towards. By working different I mean you need to start working to achieve some personal agenda not just a pay check. Pick up jobs that will allow you meet the right people, start looking for other streams of income (doesn't have to relate to your skills). Pick up new skills and such

Well, to give a more scientific response will take pages and links but like I said at the start of my answer, the solution is simple but requires you to apply your hardworking nature in a different way.

I strongly disagree here, what if your job requires a high need for online connectivity e.g blogger, stock broker, journalist etc. How do you stay focused then? E.g, I'm an indie programmer who's just starting out and needs the internet to collaborate, look up solutions on stack overflow (we al do it :) ) and test websites and such. How do I stay focused on my tasks for long periods without constantly deviating from my goal?

I think the down-voter felt your question might come across as too subjective
