I have been managing international teams on global improvement programmes for FTSE and Fortune 100 companies for the last 10 years or so, and have a pretty good grasp on managing productivity from myself and teams of up to 100 - but still loads to learn.

Got my Prince2 foundation, and familiar with it through various public sector contracts.

I am a long term member of Mensa, the high IQ society, and head up two professional bodies in Scotland: ISACA and the Institute of Information Security Professionals.

Have founded two consultancies, and run large teams for two global professional services firms - so have an excellent view of the balance required at both ends.

Tend to look at the bigger picture, rather than the benefits of a specific tool.

comment How to “do it now”?
what - that first link THelper posted is exactly applicable. Read the answers there. There are no tricks - you just need to identify when you are procrastinating, and stop it.

I'm not sure this will work either, but is much closer to answerable, so I have reopened

comment How to be productive on publishing scientific papers?
Comparing all the folks I know who submitted papers for PHD, some waited until deadlines, some worked constantly throughout the year, some worked in mornings, some were most productive when working internships, others when relaxing in the country. This is the problem with questions that ask for something definite - publishing papers isn't anything special, it's the same as many other forms of work. Suddenly trying to fit a years worth of work into a month doesn't work, so there isn't a way to show you a productivity trick that will suddenly get you there.

comment Reminder services: do they exist?
There are many life coaching services. I really wouldn't class this as life coaching though. Trying to think of a term that would help you search, and I'm coming up blank. It's almost hand-holding or nannying.

comment Knowing I want to accomplish something but feeling like I don't want to
A lot of these things do come down to that. I often find with new members of my team that until they have been pushed they don't know just how much they can achieve. Practicing difficult things often makes them easier.

Actually, that is worth popping in here. I've mentioned it before and on my latest meta question. I'll edit it in. Thanks.

Comments are really just for minor queries/clarifications etc.If you can get some more upvotes to get to 20 rep - enough for chat - then we can move this to chat where conversations are appropriate.

Jared - you misunderstand what i am trying to tell you, and everything you are saying make it very obvious why you have this problem. With the folks i mentor, the materials are fine but they are almost irrelevant. You have probably already read a useful range of materials. The key is to understand what you need to switch your behaviours. These comments do seen to have moved away from your initial question a lot though, so please edit the question to include these updates.

Of course they are all actionable. The key you need to get from every talk, every paper, every book is that it is down to the individual to make it happen. None of these techniques work without personal investment and understanding. This is why productivity coaches can make so much money from such simple concepts - you have to try and try and try with the subject until they have the lightbulb moment.

Yes - you have said you struggle in believing in goals. This leads me to my earlier comment - the problem is not whether goals or systems are better, it's in defining either in such a way that they can achieve things that help you progress.

It doesn't matter to me. I focus on goals and do whatever activities take me to those goals. Some goals are activities.

This just implies you need to be a bit more realistic about your goals. I just popped some simple, obvious ones in my post as examples. I make sure all my goals are actionable, and have a few layers of stretch to help push me beyond my comfort zone.
