comment How can I remind myself about tasks at the right time to reduce the number of interruptions?
The nice thing about this answer is that if you think about it once at any time you will be reminded at the right time.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it belongs on SuperUser and Programmers

This question is off-topic here. The part of your question about how to implement your algorithm in Excel would be valid on SuperUser. The part of your question about the algorithm itself would be valid on Programmers.

Your question is maybe better suited for Software Recommendations but not in it's current form (neither is it here). We need much more information: Nested task or just one dimension? OS/online? Price? Any other features? What software have you already looked at and why was that insufficient? Please read meta.softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/336/…, then edit and/or move your question.

comment I procrastinated and now I'm in the hole several assignments deep, where do I begin the climb out?
+1 for Probably the best way to "schedule" is to commit to put in a certain amount of time each day and keep working until you have put in that time. As e.g. most succesful authors will tell you: It's not a matter of inspiration, but from just sitting down and working the hours.

Also, there's many questions on 'backlog' here that could get you started.
