comment Software to plan lab experiments
For a digital labbook I would recommend productivity.stackexchange.com/a/1600/560

Maybe you should crosspost this to skeptics.se to get some scientific studies that explain the difference in detail quantitatively and qualitatively. Very good question

+1 for learning vocabulary of a new language writing is the best method. Same goes for painted colorful mind maps summarizing more complex knowledge, you understand things reading wikipedia, but you don't learn this way very well the content

comment How to sort out and where to archive browser bookmarks?
@grunwald2.0 For the processing: At least firefox has many addons to extend bookmarks manager filter and search options. Many of your links will probably receive similar tags when containing blog or .com. Also creation date of link should help you you to find group of links. In Firefox there exists most visited category. This should help you to make it more efficient imo

@xralf go into settings (notification bar --> task changer options), there you can choose different functions for 5 overlay screen buttons... I also use swipepad more often, taskchanger mainly for the AlT-Tab Shortcut :)

@xralf imo not a functional, but for switching back and forth between 2 apps, e.g. browser and note-taking, the ALT-Tab function of Task Changer is pretty comfortable and as fast as possible.

comment What FUTURE-PROOF software for building & managing a personal BIG knowledge base?
thanks, I know docbook, unfortunately no tagging. Its imho fine for Documentation, but not a knowledge base you want to quickly edit and search and watch even on mobile device. Take a look at PMWiki (popular php-Wiki text file based)

comment How to use the second brain of the Stack Exchange network in a productive way?
@Tom +1 thats cool and kind of answers/tips i was hoping for. I didnt find a thread on SE describing all the technical options to use/search/filter/subscribe SE, so i thought making a question here would be good idea to gather this info. We can also make this community wiki to gather tips how to stay up to date, introduce yourself to a new topic with help of SE.

say you want to introduce yourself into javascript programming. Alot of knowledge already here. Asking question as a beginner would probably result in alot of duplicates. So what are the best options/methods/3rd party tools i have to find the important Q&A for a JS newbie in minimum time on different SE sites? As a newbie you dont know what actually the interesting and important questions/problems are. Thats what i like so much on SE relative to e.g. a long detailed book costing alot of time/money. Is there e.g. a hack to search with google for tagged/high rated Q&A on several SE sites?

comment Does having an office with a window view increases my productivity?
+1 somehow like this question, despite its imo hard to answer with proven arguments...you have any hints or suspicions beside the light factor? I think it may damage motivation & creativity looking only at a wall & screen for hours. I often look out of the window when brainstorming, imo i have the best ideas, when not staring at the problem. But this i pretty subjective. I wouldnt work in a office without windows for years, simply doesnt fit me...

@jeanne you mean meta.stackoverflow? Isnt meta.SO more for feature requests? Probably i get more answers there as more traffic. Personally everything saving time and optimizing knowledge managment is productivity related to me. Thats why i asked here (and cause of this meta.productivity.stackexchange.com/questions/120/… :) In best case we get a bit more traffic here ;) ) Also im asking explicitly for 3rd party services/apps and not only SE built in methods to manage SE knowledge base.

comment Does a Trackball make you more productive?
+1 true, learning curve seems flat for some, but addiction level is often high. Many keep buying only business notebooks with trackpoint (Thinkpad, Dell) if they get used to it. Esp. if you can type very fast, constantly moving hands to mouse/touchpad costs alot time, its like a third leg for turbo programmers :) I do even firefox gestures with my trackpoint. For Mindmapping/LaTeX Coding its really perfect as you often have to hit in between a toolbar button or change edit position.

@Alexandre amazon.com/ThinkPad-USB-Keyboard-with-TrackPoint/dp/B002ONCC6G its expensive yes, but what is the alternative?! ;) I work on a Thinkpad Notebook, so its built in. Also your index finger is more accurate/faster than your thumb for touchpad/trackball, at least to me
